Abortion is a very emotional topic. Proponents on both sides feel very strongly about their position. But there are some very interesting statistics that put abortion in a very unique light.

1. 78 % of all pregnant women who see an ultrasound do not choose abortion

There was a time when then the only way we knew anything about a gestating baby was when the mom felt a kick, during a miscarriage, or during labor and delivery. Times have changed. We now know so much more than we did even 20 years ago. Ultrasounds are a dynamic technology that shows the sex of the baby, the baby’s movements, the health and development of the baby, and the baby’s positions. According to Life News, 78% of all pregnant women who see their babies opt out of abortion. Ultrasounds are a powerful tool that gives us a window inside the hidden world off the unborn and ought to be used more often.

2. At 10 weeks’ gestation, a “fetus” has most body parts needed for the rest of her life

According to Voices for Life, at 22 days after conception, a fetus has a beating heart. At 10 weeks she has a brain, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, arms, fingers, hands, feet, and toes. She is a human. She deserves to live!

3. Only 1% of abortions are due to rape or incest

Less than 1% of all abortions take place due to rape or incest. Yet a 12-year-old can get an abortion without her parent’s knowledge in many states. Incest is with a minor is a horrible crime and should be reported as such. But performing secret abortions for minor teens simply because she does not want her dad to know is wrong on so many levels. Doesn’t a parent, who has committed no crime, have a right to know about his or her grandchild? <div id="ad_pos_content_a"

 googletag.cmd.push(function () {
 googletag.display('ad_pos_content_a');
 });

4. Abortion is the #1 killer in the black community

When we think of deaths in the black community, we may think of diabetes, heart disease, or HIV. However, according to the Radiance Foundation, abortion is the #1 killer in the black community with a whopping 300,000 abortions per year. That’s more than all other deaths combined! Please don’t get me wrong, I am black; I was raised in a black neighborhood by black parents, and I have adopted and raised two black kids of my own. It gives me no joy to report these numbers. As a matter of fact, it breaks my heart that my fellow brothers and sisters feel they have no other choice than abortion as an answer to a crisis pregnancy.

5. There were more black children who were aborted than there were born in NYC in 2013

According to Life News, a NYC Department of Health report shows that for every 1,000 black infants born in 2013, 1,200 were aborted.

“The shocking results show that 54.6 percent of black babies in healthy pregnancies were aborted that year. This means 79 black babies are aborted in the city every day and 66 are born alive.”

Again, my purpose is not to bash the black community. I am black. I grew up in NYC. I was born to an unwed, teen mom. My heart aches for my people. My purpose is to bring awareness to a major problem. The black community is missing thousands, even millions of people. Even if we don’t believe that a fetus is a human being, is it good for the black community, or any community for that matter, to be deprived of its future by neglecting their own children to be born?

These statistics are crazy! They may be controversial, but they are real. They are hard facts that should be weighed against the rhetoric of “choice.” Don’t believe me? Do your own research. Follow the links I’ve provided and go to the original sources. Make an educated decision and don’t just follow the crowd. Open your mind as well as your heart.

Considering abortion? Have you heard lots of different abortion options? Need the facts? Well, fact #1: if you are in a crisis pregnancy, adoption is a beautiful option. However, there is much misinformation about adoption. Here are some common reasons for abortion and why adoption is the perfect option for each reason.

1. My boyfriend left me. I can’t raise this baby alone.

Raising a child as a single mom can be frightening. But the fact is, 80% of all women who face a crisis pregnancy choose the option of keeping and raising the baby. You don’t have to be alone. There are people who will help: family, friends, the faith community, and the community at large. Surround yourself with loving, positive people, and those people will help you and love your baby.

2. My boyfriend is forcing me to get an abortion.

No one can force you to get an abortion. If you feel pressured, your boyfriend is not the sort of person you should be spending the rest of your life with anyway. Another option is to search for a pregnancy resource center. Bring your boyfriend with you to have a conversation with a competent professional who will offer free ultrasounds, free prenatal care, free counseling, free diapers, free formula, and free parenting training. Click here for more information.

3. My father threatened to throw me out of the house if I got pregnant.

This is awful, but it is a reality for many girls. The option, in this case, may be a maternity home. This is a place where women experiencing a crisis pregnancy can go if they are at risk for homelessness. A maternity home will care for a mom and baby before and after labor and delivery. A maternity home is a great option if a young woman needs a place to stay far away from their community where they will be loved, supported, cared for, and not judged. Maternity homes, also known as maternity housing, may provide such things as housing, support, pregnancy resources, addiction counseling, and spiritual counseling. Click here for more information. <div id="ad_pos_content_a"

4. If I place my child for adoption, I will never see her again.

Not necessarily so. Have you considered an open adoption? An open adoption is a structured relationship between the adoptive parents, the biological family, and the adoptive child after the adoption is finalized. This a great option that allows the birth mother to create a life plan for the child. An open adoption ensures that she stays involved in the child’s life as long as it is in the child’s best interest to do so.

5. I am the victim of rape or incest.

If you have been raped or have endured incest, you are the victim of a crime. Pregnancy is not a crime; rape is. If you do not report the crime and proceed with an abortion, the crime may be covered up and the perpetrator may be free to do it again…possibly to a different victim. Do you have a younger sister or younger cousin that could also be the victim of this person? The best way to avoid that is to report the perpetrator, have the baby, and place the child for adoption—if that is best for you and your baby. Otherwise, having an abortion creates two victims: you and your baby. Remember, the baby is innocent; the perpetrator is not.

You have options. Whether you choose to place your child for adoption or raise the child yourself, do what is best for your child. Abortion is not predestined for your child. You have the power to give your child a life that can be lived to the fullest. Consider all options before making a final decision that cannot be reversed.

Are you considering placing a child for adoption? Not sure what to do next? First, know that you are not alone. Visit Adoption.org or call 1-800-ADOPT-98 to speak to one of our Options Counselors to get compassionate, nonjudgmental support.
